Frankfurt Dresden Dance Company - Jacopo Godani

Frankfurt Dresden Dance Company ::Metamorphers / Echoes from a restless soul / Moto Perpetuo

For this triple bill, an unbreakable bond was forged between music and choreography: Three abstract ballets choreographed by Jacopo Godani with music composed by Béla Bartók, Maurice Ravel and 48nord.

In Metamorphers Godani captured Béla Bartók´s String Quartet Nº 4 (1928). Bartók´s string quartets are recognized as crowning achievements of twentieth-century chamber music. The influence and legacy in contemporary music of these unprecedented musical creations are manifold. They present special challenges for musicians, performers and listeners. For Diego Ramos Rodríguez, Ensemble Modern violinist, their rhythmical, melodic and textural richness and their complexity extend beyond the limits of the written score and unfold completely only in the course of an intense performing and listening experience.

Bartók, one of the most important composers and musical thinkers of the twentieth century, demonstrates his genius through the fourth quartet´s five mirroring movements. Each one of the five movements has its very own distinctive idiosyncrasy and brings the idea of musical syncopation to the highest perfection. A prevailing musicality invades the choreography and reflects Bartók´s composition while Godani plays with naturalness and spontaneity, embracing an enormous configuration of choreographic material. Syncopation is not only in the music, but also in the relation between the steps and the music; they syncopate and complement each other. The choreography visualizes the score’s puzzle, allowing both universes to converge. Metamorphers is unquestionably a musical work: in it, dance becomes the melody of the music.

With this production the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company collaborated for the first time artistically with the renowned Ensemble Modern, one of the worldwide leading orchestras for New Music: Its members played Bartók´s score live onstage.

Echoes from a Restless Soul is set to Le Gibet and Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit, a composition for solo piano written by Maurice Ravel in 1908. The base for this masterpiece – one of the most challenging partitura ever written - is a French poem by Aloysius Bertrand. On a creation of incredible virtuosity, Ravel brings to life Bertrand´s poems by using an innovative piano technique within a classical form. While Gaspard de la Nuit is confined to a strict, classical structure it conveys atmospheres, dramatic intensities and images full of monsters and corpses in its reveries.

In this eerie otherworldliness, Godani and the company exhibit an array of pas de deux and quartets that outlines a landscape of virtuosity. Through them, unending combinations of a formal relationship – the pas de deux – are presented. Godani enhances movement with pointe shoes while creating a remarkable freedom within certain aesthetic parameters – as the ones from a more classical approach. The choreographic elements in Echoes form a common thread, merging in an atmosphere that transcends time and place. Ravel´s score was performed live onstage by Ruslan Bezbrozh, the company´s accompanist and renowned concert pianist.

The final piece of the evening was Moto Perpetuo, a choreography with a striking neoclassical matrix that allows classical ballet technique to flow towards contemporary forms. Through intense group sections with the whole company and empowered physical action – highlighted by pointe work – this stunning piece reveals the artistic essence and the character of the company. In this production, Godani collaborated once more with 48nord who provided the choreographer with a fascinating electronic musical horizon.
