The Supervisory Board of the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company GmbH (DFDC), represented by the shareholder Freunde der Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company e.V., is looking for a new

as of the 2023/24 season, i.e., September 1, 2023.

We are looking for an artistic personality (choreographer, curator) or a team (existing or gathering for this purpose) with several years of successful leadership experience in an international dance institution / independent dance ensemble. The new Artistic Director should be able:

  • to shape the DFDC artistically as a distinctive identity and to establish it in an economically sound manner;
  • to position the DFDC through outstanding productions as one of the leading German dance companies in the international context of contemporary dance;
  • to understand the legacy of William Forsythe, the founder of the Company, as an artistic attitude that critically questions conventions and constantly focuses on experimenting with new forms of dance expression;
  • to recognise and further develop the mediation of contemporary dance as one of the central tasks;
  • to recognize the principles of collaboration within the Company and cooperation with other artists, institutions and the independent scenes as constitutive for artistic work;
  • to promote dance in the urban societies of Frankfurt and Dresden and to recognise in this field of tension an opportunity for innovation;
  • to build up a regular audience in both cities that identifies with "their" Dance Company.

Current framework:
The DFDC, formerly The Forsythe Company, receives an annual public funding of € 2.9 million under a cooperation agreement concluded with the state capital Dresden, the city of Frankfurt am Main, the state of Hesse and the Free State of Saxony.

It has two residences, the regional capital, Dresden, (currently 23 performances per season) and the city of Frankfurt am Main (currently 25 performances per season) with its current venues, Festspielhaus Hellerau and Bockenheimer Depot, and regularly stages national and international guest performances.

The Company is managed jointly by an artistic and a commercial management.

It currently has an ensemble consisting of 16 dancers and a total of about 28 employees.

The Supervisory Board will decide on the appointment of the Artistic Director following the recommendation of a Search Committee appointed by it. The selection procedure will consist of three stages:

In the first stage, applicants will be requested to submit a letter of motivation with a concept sketch (max. 3 pages), an artistic CV (max. 2 pages), their website (if available) and web links to projects and work samples (max. 10 references). The concept sketch should contain, among other things, ideas and suggestions for the further development of the described current framework conditions, whereby the two residences and the joint management by an artistic and a commercial management are to be regarded as set.

Based on the applications, an invitation to the second stage of the application process will be issued. In the second round, i.e. after being invited by the Search Committee, applicants will be requested to submit a detailed concept naming possible artists, artistic positions and possible cooperation partners. The selection committee will then invite selected candidates to a personal interview.

In the third stage, the candidates recommended by the Search Committee will present themselves to the Supervisory Board, which will subsequently make its decision.

The conclusion of the contract with the new Artistic Director/Executive Director is subject to the general budgetary proviso of the DFDC's four public collaborative partners that the DFDC's collaborative contract with the public partners be extended from January 1, 2024 to December 12, 2028.

Application deadline extended: Applications must be submitted in writing via email to stefan.mumme - at - by January 31, 2022.
